Droste experiment

This is a finished image, but I'm not uploading it to flickr because I'm going to rework it. For starters, I'm going to remove the top foot that is poking into the spiral, and then maybe experiment with some other fun details.

The Droste illusion is fascinating, and I'm still experimenting. I'm planning to produce some real head-twisters.

Today's photos: Near Newport

I realise I haven't been posting many pictures lately, but hopefully I will post some of the backlog this week. In the meantime, here are a few from today, taken while Geocaching in the greater Newport area.

Trying to decide what to do with my Munny

I bought my first Munny last weekend. Since then I printed out a bunch of small templates and have been doodling designs. My favourite so far is a Cyclops-robot thing. I'd like to find a black marker that will work well on the surface.

Gimp/Inkscape experiment

I had an idea for a project today: to take photographs and composite in highly two dimensional illustrated characters. I'm sure this has been done before (Who Framed Roger Rabbit? etc.), but the image of a Miyazaki-style sea strider popped into my head, almost exactly as I've rendered it here.

I'm not sure about the result. Think I'll have to try a few more and develop the style a bit.

Last photos of 2008

Taken from the tops of two different 'mountains' near Caerphilly, these are the last pictures taken by me in 2008 (and my first post for 2009). I'd have taken a picture of the first sunrise too, but I actually completely missed the first morning of the year!

Torchwood set photos: the last few

I had almost forgotten to finish uploading my behind the scenes pictures from my time on the Dr Who and Torchwood sets! The big cog-wheel-door (which always reminded me of Deep Space Nine) is as convincing as the rest of the set, until you thump it and hear the dull thud of plywood.

You can also see a few more monitors here, this time running an 'alert' cycle. When I posted the first post (Torchwood uses Linux) I expected that all the monitors were run as virtual machines from one big PC somewhere. In fact, there is a networked pile of old computers just outside the set. VLC controlled through a custom flash interface run on an old Windows box. As you would imagine, the different displays just run on a loop.

Finally, there is the 'invisible lift' and the unsubtle Torch-mobile which was parked outside the studios

Custom Moleskine notebook for Asus Eee PC

A few snapshots of my notebook for my Asus Eee PC, all inked by myself with Faber-Castell PITT artist pens. I use it too keep notes of all the applications I like,  solutions to problems, all the Firefox extensions I can't live without and various other things. (I use Google Notebook a lot for this kind of thing, but that's of limited usefulness if you can't get your internet working!)

You know, it's almost sacrilegious to say this, but I never liked Tux! To me, he's a really unappealing manifestation of a Penguin. Mine here is a first attempt at an alternative. He looks a bit too mean perhaps.

Today's photos: Cosmeston Lake

Another set taken at Cosmeston Lake, in South Wales. It was clear and sunny when we arrived, but almost instantly became foggy.
