Ubuntu for girls

Mark Shuttleworth has kicked up a bit of a storm by apparently saying that Linux was "hard to explain to girls". There is an open letter post about this on the Geek Feminism Blog, followed by a hell of a lot of comments on the subject. It seems to boil down to 'he didn't really mean it like that', 'it's not okay to say that kind of thing, even if you didn't mean it like that' and 'has anyone seen this video or a transcript anyway?'

Anyway, I've made a little graphic that Ubuntu could use for their 11.10 release if they wanted to tackle this issue. :)

Easy Peasy Linux, logo submissions

As I've mentioned here before, Ubuntu Eee, the first OS that I installed on my then-new Asus Eee PC, is having to rebrand itself so it no longer mimics the Ubuntu identity. They kicked off a competition to design a logo and win a snazzy netbook, and now the submissions are all in.

I hope they have the good taste to pick one of the more polished and original concepts. It's obvious which entries are good and which are bad, but some have more subtle problems. For example, many of the logos incorperate a tiny 'e', which instantly makes me think of Internet Explorer - not a positive association! There are others which are quite appealing, but fall very much into web 2.0 cliches, with rounded corners, a glossy plastic sheen and vivid colours.

Many others play with variations on the Ubuntu logo and/or lemons. Some of these are quite clever, but if it's too obvious it seems inappropriate.

Upgrading my Eee PC to 2GB of RAM

And I'm pleased to report that it was as dead easy as it looked, took five minutes and caused zero complications. I can't say that I've noticed any speed bump though.

I also bought a 1GB SD card for about £3.40, which I plan to just leave in the SD slot instead of the blank piece. Next on the list: Mobile broadband dongle and big extra battery...

Torchwood uses Linux! Ubuntu, to be exact...

Sadly this shot didn't come out the clearest, but I spotted today that one of the computers on the Torchwood Hub set was running Ubuntu. It had VLC running, so I'm assuming that they use free software to play all the graphics that give you the illusion of a super-advanced OS.

In related news, I got Ubuntu-eee up and running on my Eee PC 1000. Go me!

Great Eee-xpectations: Which distro for me?

Today I placed my order on Amazon for an Asus Eee PC 1000 (BK002, Linux Preloaded, 1GB RAM, 40GB SSD (Black)), so now I have my finger crossed that it arrives by the weekend, in good condition and that they didn't screw up and send me a Windows one!

Assuming all goes well, I still have one pressing decision - which distro goes on it?

I don't like the default Asus one, although I'll probably play with it for a few days. I was hoping my desktop distro of choice, Linux Mint, would make a special netbook version... called Minteee, naturally!

  • Ubuntu Eee seems the most promising. I'm familiar with Ubuntu, so that makes it a fairly logical choice. Also, most Eee distros seem to use a forum post on wiki.eeeuser.com as their 'homepage'. Ubuntu Eee at least has a proper website. It also uses the netbook remix interface, which seems perfect.
  • Eeebuntu snagged the better name, but their website seems super-slow, so they were harder to investigate.
  • EeeOS promises right up front to not 'do everything for you "out of the box"', so that's probably not for me!
  • PupEee looks and sounds good to me, but I tend to like things with a bit more polish.
If anyone has any thoughts or suggestions, I'm very interested :)
